No, I don't think it's that simple.
The game will be a success whatever the weather. In the long run this will gloss over, and they'll be sitting on a stash of money bigger than god. That said, what they ARE doing is cutting off the most hardcore segment of their market, and when you start to do that, a whole host of smaller problems show up.
1. There will be no competitive community; which reduces their product from a serious pass-time AND a fun product, to a purely "for fun" pass-time.
2. No modding community means smaller life-spans for their games, which means people get less for their money and are less satisfied. You'll no longer have people spending 1000 hours on their games anymore.
3. The anticipation on future IW products risks being far smaller, as it's largely the pc community that's been spinning the
PR wheel until now, and is now spinning it uncontrolably fast in the oppositie direction.
4. LANs, gaming sponsors, and companies profiteering off high-end gamers and their needs will see cut profits. This means less R&D in the future, which in the long run means we don't get such great leaps forward in technology in gfx etc. This means in the future, gaming companies could end up having to slow down their develoment speeds as the hardware users have available to them will be unable to follow such demanding gfx.
Basically, unless something is done quickly or the community finds a new knight in shining armour game developer... competitive FPS' future on PC looks dire, as does competitive gaming's future in general. It's no secret that the accuracy of a mouse and keyboard is far beyond that capable in a controller of a console, which means either competitive gaming becomes far LESS competitive, or it dies entirely.
^^^welcome to my worst case scenarios.
